Now we’re going to show you a route of the best medieval towns in Catalonia.

Campervan route through the best medieval towns of Catalonia:

  • Montblanc: We'll start our route in Montblanc, approximately 119 kilometres - or 90 minutes' drive - from Barcelona. Montblanc is in the province of Tarragona and is known for its walled enclosure, its towers and its great bridge. Montblanc’s historical centre was declared a Historical and Artistic Heritage Site in the year 1948.

  • Guimerá: The adventure continues in Guimerà, a town very close to Montblanc, only half an hour's drive away. It is located in the province of Lleida and is considered by many people to be the most beautiful medieval town in all of Catalonia. Its cobbled streets, its fortress, its architecture, and its main square, dating back to the twelfth century… It will leave you speechless! Plus, if you travel to Guimerà in the month of August, you can enjoy the medieval market.

  • Solsona y Cardona: Staying in the province of Lleida, we arrive in Solsona, more or less an hour from Guimerà. You can get lost in its streets, and admire the city wall, the incredible Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace… And if we continue on the C-55 road, we’ll arrive in Cardona, another of the most beautiful medieval towns in Catalonia. Cardona is known for its beautiful castle, built in the ninth century, which sits on top of a hill. You can reach the castle on foot in 15 minutes, or drive, as there is a free parking area.

  • Besalú: We leave Lleida behind and continue the route to Girona, the last stop. We will start in Besalú. Travelling along the C-25 from Cardona, we'll arrive at our destination in about an hour and a half. Visiting Besalú will bring you back to past times, and you'll feel as if you were in a medieval knight movie or the last season of Game of Thrones. Enjoy its impressive bridge, the Jewish baths or the church of the monastery of San Pedro de Besalú and San Julián.

  • Begur: From Besalú to Begur will take little more than an hour. As well as its beautiful coves like Sa Tuna or Sa Riera, among the best in Catalonia, Begur can boast one of the most beautiful medieval castles. From the top of the castle, which dates back to the eleventh century, you can enjoy wonderful views of the Gulf of Roses and Sa Riera cove.

  • Tossa de Mar: Finally, we’ll arrive at the last stop of our route, Tossa de Mar. Just like Begur, Tossa is a perfect place to visit for its beaches and its medieval history. This is one of the most beautiful villages in Catalonia, because while you take a dip in the sea, you can enjoy magnificent views of the castle.

Where can I sleep with the campervan?

As we've said before, travelling by campervan is one of the easiest and most budget-friendly ways to travel. Plus, your children will love it, since you can stop to eat or sleep in the rest areas and overnight areas. At Cargoling we recommend the PARK4NIGHT app, a mobile application where you can check the nearest camping areas. This application uses geolocation, and you can check out recommendations for the best spots to "park for night" from other users.

If you want to enjoy this route around Catalonia (Spain) with a campervan you can rent one of our vehicles from our website www.cargoling.com. This shows you the availability, makes your budget and allows you to make the reservation online. Cajoling is located in the centre of Barcelona (Poble Nou’s neighborhood). You can come to pick up the campervan coming with the urban public transport. And we also offer you the possibility to get you the campervan to Barcelona’s Airport.
