The winter trident: Vallter 2000, Masella and Port del Compte15/01/2020
For many, winter is synonym of mountain. In this post we have described a splendid route that connects three of the most beautiful ski resorts in Catalonia: Vallter 2000, Masella and Port del Compte. We have chosen this itinerary because, even with the short distance that separates them, they are unique and very different stations. For this adventure we will have a Ford Transit Custom equipped with heating, fridge with freezer and two double beds so you do not have to worry about anything but relax and enjoy. Stay to check it out!
If you leave Barcelona you will have to take the C17 lasting approximately 1h and 15min. Upon reaching Ripoll you will have to turn right following the indications of Sant Joan de les Abadesses and Camprodon to Setcases. The whole route is well signposted and you will have no difficulty getting there. In total, a two-hour journey that will take you to discover one of the most majestic and snowiest stations in Europe, as well as one of the cheapest in the country (€ 27 / day).
One of the most surprising things is the location of the slopes: in the course of the Ter River, from where you will enjoy privileged views of the Costa Brava and the golf course of Roses, becoming one of the only stations in the world that will allow you to see the sea while skiing. As for the slopes, we recommend the Xalet, located between black pine forests, and the Xemeneia, short but spectacular. You can spend the day skiing and finish it by going to the Marmotas bar, located more than 2,500 meters high and from where you can enjoy a sunset over the sea. The descent down the tracks, when there is practically no one left, will be the best way to put an end to the first day.
Once you have recovered and entered into heat you will have to take the road to Ripoll, and from there direction to Ribes de Freser, where you can spend the night. To access we have chosen the old road of the Collada de Toses because it is in a better state, there is little traffic and it is shorter than the new one. Once you arrive in La Molina you will find several areas enabled to spend the night with a good offer of services and quiet areas to rest and gain strength for the next day with your camper.
The next morning, and after a good coffee and unbeatable views of the slopes, we will make our way to the Masella ski pass. It is a station like few, with very peculiar and abundant tracks. You can climb up to the middle of the station, just below the Tossa, and ski to the exit of the Jumbo with the bird's-eye tracks. As a curious fact this year Masella has broken all records by opening slopes on November 1, and thanks to the latest reforms and developments in the snow cannons that have been installed, they ensure quality snow and a season that will lengthen, for the first time, Until six months.
After a few hours skiing you can stop and continue the camper route along one of the most beautiful roads in the territory. Passing through the tunnel of Cadí, you will head towards Pedraforca towards Saldes and Gósol. The road is quite narrow and winding, and when you least expect it, ypu will see the top of the Pedraforca. It is a mountain worth climbing, and surely all nature lovers have done it once in their life, at least!
Passing Gósol, you will make your way to Josa del Cadí, a town where you can stop to eat and we recommend you to go for a walk. If you feel like stretching your legs you can get close to their church, built on top of a huge arch of natural rock that you will not see until you go to the north side. You can eat in the camper, parked in the enabled parking of the town, which is a mountain meadow overlooking the Cadí and the town of Josa.
At the end we will return to the road towards Tuixent, since the last stop and where you can spend the night is Port del Compte. When you have left Coll del Port behind, on your right and in the opposite direction to the mountain, you will see the slopes. At the foot of these there is an area reserved for campers and motorhomes, where you can enjoy coverage and Internet.
If you have never been, you will surely realize that Port del Compte is a different ski resort from the rest, with very well designed and modern slopes and great red shovels that go down curves until the beginning of the lifts. The narrow routes that enter and leave the black pine forests remember the shape of a maze. In addition, it has an optimal area for beginners and black vertigo tracks for expert skiers.
The upper part is a high plateau, uncommon on the ski slopes, which always maintains a very characteristic and unique identity. If you add to this that the price of the ski pass is one of the most competent in Catalonia, then we find more reasons to fall in love with these tracks. If you feel like staying to eat in the area, we highly recommend the bar in the Sucre sector, with home-cooked menu and with the snow at your feet.
At this station we will end the three-day ski route. The way back to Barcelona will be done by the impressive landscape of the Llosa del Cavall reservoir and the Solsona lowland and, with a bit of luck, with the sun setting behind the Mountain of Montserrat. Time to say goodbye to Cargoling, but we are sure it will not be the last time!
You can also search for campervan areas (areas adapted to park campervans) with the PARK4NIGHT app. This app uses geolocation, and you can see users' reviews of the best spots to "park for night".
If you want to enjoy this route around Catalonia (Spain) with campervans you can rent one of our vehicles from our website Cargoling.com. This shows you the availability, makes your budget and allows you to make the reservation online. Cargoling is located in the centre of Barcelona (Poble Nou’s neighborhood). You can come to pick up the campervan coming with the urban public transport. And we also offer you the possibility to get you the campervan to Barcelona’s Airport.
